In this episode, we talk to Malaysian registered conservator Dr. Tan Chin Ling regarding the current practices, challenges, and future of heritage conservation in Malaysia and Penang. Dr. Tan’s journey was inspired by his childhood in an old shophouse in Bagan Serai, Perak. This personal connection drove him to specialise in masonry structural heritage building conservation and pursue a career dedicated to historic preservation. As a younger-generation expert, he serves on the Penang State Heritage Council and as Vice President of the ICOMOS International Training Committee (CIF).
Through his international involvement & experience, he realised the significance of local knowledge and “bottom-up” public participation, which is increasingly reflected in Malaysia’s heritage policies. He believes successful conservation requires patience, policy support, and education to integrate heritage into daily life, ultimately inspiring the next generation to enter the profession.
