Penang Institute is proud to host a public lecture entitled “Has the West Lost It?” by Kishore Mahbubani which is scheduled as follows:
Date: Monday 20 August 2018
Time: 4.00pm–6.00pm
Venue: Conference Hall 1, Penang Institute, No. 10 Jalan Brown, George Town, Penang
THE TALK
The latest question that Kishore Mahbubani puts to the world—and this is expressed in the title of his latest book—is “Has the West Lost It?” (Penguin Random House, 2018). As the subtitle reveals, this volume is a “provocation”, as was his early book “Can Asians Think?”. With this provocation comes much advice, not only for the West as represented by America and Europe, but also for Asians, whose quick development has left them with multiple challenges ranging from being capable world leaders to resolving stubborn domestic conflicts and regional tensions such as those between India and China. Beyond all that, the goal has to be about making the world a better place for all.
THE SPEAKER
Kishore Mahbubani is Senior Advisor (University & Global Relations) and Professor in the Practice of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. He previously served for 33 years in Singapore’s diplomatic service and is recognised as an expert on Asian and world affairs. He was the founding dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy until his retirement from that position at the end of 2017.
A prolific and powerful writer, Professor Mahbubani’s most famous books include “Can Asians Think?”; “The Great Convergence: Asia, the West, and the Logic of One World”; “The New Asian Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Power to the East”; “Beyond the Age of Innocence: Rebuilding Trust between America and the World”; and “The ASEAN Miracle: A Catalyst for Peace”.
