Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times

Abstract

After being denied entry to Malaysia for nearly five months, Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times has become a best seller since being cleared for sale last month. The book continues to make waves as Malaysians read it and debate the record of their longest-serving prime minister. Barry Wainassesses Dr. Mahathir’s controversial economic development policies, his lasting influence on key institutions and his prominence in international affairs as a champion of the Third World. In his talk, Barry will say why and how he wrote the book, and review Dr. Mahathir’s legacy and what it means for Malaysia today.

The Speaker

Barry Wain, Writer-in-Residence at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, is an Australian journalist who has lived in Asia for 38 years. A former Editor of The Asian Wall Street Journal, he also worked for the Far Eastern Economic Review an Associate Editor.

Mr Wain will be available to sign copies of his book at the end of his talk.
