Executive Director of the Penang Institute, Dato’ Dr. Ooi Kee Beng, joins analyst Dr.Fauwaz Abdul Aziz in this episode to present a much-needed historical perspective of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Using this ‘long-view’ of the issue, Dr Ooi points out some ironies and paradoxes of the US’ recent policies – such as their resemblance to the early developmental policies of ‘Third World’ countries of the 1950s and 1960s – and what they might imply or reflect of the deeper anxieties held by American leaders and policy-makers.
