In this episode, we are delighted to welcome Ling Goh, founder and artistic director of the Teochew Puppet & Opera House, and a fourth-generation practitioner of Teochew opera. Ling shares her family’s multi-generational journey in Teochew performing arts, including traditional opera and iron-rod puppetry, as well as her commitment to carrying this cultural legacy forward. Her mother, Toh Ai Hwa, was conferred the Warisan Kebangsaan Orang Hidup (Living National Heritage) (WAKOH) recognition in honour of the family’s longstanding contributions to the preservation and promotion of traditional performing arts. In 2014, Ling founded Malaysia’s only cultural arts space dedicated to Teochew opera, with a mission to preserve and promote this traditional art form. Taking this commitment further, the Teochew Puppet & Opera House will host the international symposium, Moved to Life: Tradition and Reinvention in Asian Puppet Theatre, on 7–8 November 2026. Bringing together performing arts practitioners from various countries, the symposium will explore the preservation, cross-cultural exchange and contemporary reinvention of traditional puppetry.
