In the digitised world, location appears to be mere coordinates where one source originated from but in reality, geographical location with national boundary drawn is often grouped together based on a loosely-defined geopolitical region where realignment happens alongside the change in leadership. In this talk, the speaker will examine a broad identification of the existential threats facing humanity’s future and examine the responses of the Great Powers and their growing rivalry for global hegemony as well as the validity of the Chinese challenge to Western imperial dominance. The changing geopolitical situation complicated by global warming, nuclear proliferation and the emergence of regional powers in addition to resurgent nationalism everywhere especially in the wealthier industrialised nations of America and Europe will be analysed in the historical context of capitalist globalisation and its consequences on state and society. Will there be hope for the communities to reclaim their commons, locally and nationally, amidst growing uncertainties and threats to human survival?
