Moved to Life
Tradition and Reinvention in Asian Puppet Theatre
2026 International Performing Arts Symposium & Puppetry Spectacular
How does a pair of hands give a puppet life? And how does a craft carried across generations keep going in the present?
Organised by the Teochew Puppet and Opera House, Moved to Life brings together puppeteers, researchers and cultural practitioners from across Asia. For the first time, Teochew iron-rod puppeteers from China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia gather on one stage, joined by international artists from the United States, Japan, India, Taiwan and beyond.
Through performances, panel discussions, artist dialogues, workshops, a curated exhibition and a documentary screening, the symposium explores how traditional puppetry is passed on, exchanged and remade for our time. The event is endorsed by the Department of National Heritage (Jabatan Warisan Negara), serving in an advisory capacity. Daytime sessions at the Penang Institute are ticketed, while evening sessions at Armenian Park are free and open to all.
