The Transpacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) is a free trade agreement (FTA) which involves a variety of socioeconomic policy issues. Currently it has 12 prospective member countries, Malaysia is one of them. The TPPA was reached on October 5, 2015 in Atlanta, the US, after seven years of negotiations. Subsequently it was ratified in Malaysia by the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara on 27 and 28th Jan 2016, respectively.
The TPPA is different from any previously known FTAs, because it involves new scopes covering government procurement, state-owned enterprises, intellectual property, and labour and environment, have previously not been found in any bilateral or multilateral FTAs signed by Malaysia. It is a huge ask for ordinary citizens to digest the main TPPA text (which consists of 30 chapters) and to understand the complexity and implications of the TPPA.
With perspectives from distinguished panelists and responses from participants, this forum seeks to provide meaningful insights about TPPA to business communities, entrepreneurs, investors and potential member countries of the trade deal.
