Penang Institute, the public policy think tank of the Penang state government, is proud to host a public forum entitled “Value Creation in Top Asian Firms”, featuring Dr. Lim Chee Han and Dr. Lim Kim-Hwa of Penang Institute and a board of panellist comprising Mr. Ooi Kok Seng, the lead partner for KPMG in Northern Region and Penang; and Prof. Emeritus Dr Lim Koon Ong, the former First Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Over the past 2 decades, the fortunes of several Asian countries have diverged: South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan have successfully achieved developed country status, alongside Australia and Japan. However, several other countries, like Malaysia and Thailand, have remain trapped in the middle income group. The key reason to this is that the economy in these countries failed to create value fast enough to catch up with the high income countries.

Penang Institute would like to offer new perspectives to economic growth and value creation through this public forum. And most importantly, we would like to discuss why value creation matters, especially for Malaysia. By analysing and revisiting the aftermath of 1997 Asian Financial Crisis as well as the impact of economic structural reform policies stipulated by IMF, we hope that this forum would be able to answer how IMF reforms affected short- and long-term economic recovery for certain countries. Besides, is there any optimal debt level for a firm in order to increase value creation?
