Launch of the Sub-National Families on the Edge Study in Penang State

On Feb 18, Penang Institute together with UNICEF Malaysia launched a study to determine the impact of Covid-19 on children and women in low income families in Penang. The outcomes are expected to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of social welfare for the vulnerable in Penang. It does so by tracking beneficiary households’ socioeconomic conditions, welfare, and wellbeing. It also makes comparisons against pre-pandemic household conditions, to understand how living standards have altered. At least 600 households in Penang and five CSOs, across all districts, will be invited to participate in the study.

Present during the launch were YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, Dr Rashed Mustafa Sarwar, UNICEF Representative to Malaysia and Special Representative to Brunei Darussalam, YB Chong Eng, EXCO for Social Development and non-Islamic Affairs, and Dato’ Dr Ooi Kee Beng, Executive Director of Penang Institute.
