Countering Disinformation & Data Journalism – Insights from TechCamp Malaysia

Over the course of 3 years, Penang Institute has been in collaboration with the US Embassy to train content creators and journalists through its TechCamp Malaysia programme to counter disinformation and produce quality content. Participants were equipped with the right skills, tech tools and knowledge to craft and apply sustainable technological solutions and utilize TechCamp’s follow-on funds to move their ideas into action.

Join us for this exceptional event where our esteemed alumni are eager to unveil the profound impact of four distinct projects, offering you firsthand insights into the transformative ripple effects they have ignited within our communities.

In addition, we are honoured to introduce our distinguished speaker, Daniel Ng, Vice President of Marketing at Neo4j and Managing Partner at Omni-Integra, for a keynote session titled “Data Journalism: Unleashing the Power of Data for Investigative Reporting”, where he will delve into the world of data journalism and explore the power of data-driven storytelling and its impact on our understanding of complex issues.

Projects to be showcased:

1. Neighbourhood Journalism, by Elroi Yee – A deep, hyperlocal reporting of an over 10-year battle of car park dispute at Sea Park apartment, Petaling Jaya, between its residents and the landowner of the carpark lot, all taking place within the investigative journalist’s backyard.

2. Youth Workshop, by Elroi Yee – The Fourth Academy hosted a series of workshops for teenagers aged 16-19 to teach multimedia content creation and media literacy with an emphasis on journalistic values. This project aimed to empower young participants to become skilled content creators and influencers with strong literacy abilities and the capacity to produce engaging and impactful content.

3. Open Source Data Visualisation Tools for Malaysian Elections, by Yan Naung Oak – The project was aimed at creating interactive data visualisations about past election results, parties and candidates for Malaysian elections that are sharable, modifiable, available in 3 languages (English, Bahasa Melayu, Chinese), and is designed to meet accessibility standards for users who are vision impaired.

4. Pekanbaru Literacy Fair, by Elvi Rahmi – The Demi Masa Institute’s project in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, centered on enhancing media literacy and combatting disinformation. It included a workshop, “Tangkis Hoax Pilkada”, educating over 60 participants on media literacy to debunk false information and a TV talk show emphasizing media literacy’s importance.

About the Keynote Speaker: Daniel Ng
Topic: Data Journalism: Unleashing the Power of Data for Investigative Reporting

Daniel is a pioneer in the ICT industry and Marketing discipline. His 40 years of experience takes him from his Software Engineer beginning, through his Marketing leadership in companies like IBM, Red Hat, Microsoft and other global leaders, to his market development role in Sun Microsystems, where he helped it achieve the first MSC status company as well as contributing to building the foundation of Malaysia’s Multimedia Super Corridor. His experience includes the journey “From MIPs, through Collected Data, to now Connected Data and Sustainability”.

Daniel is also passionate in serving organizations like Smart Cities Network, MAD Academy and the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he believes in giving back to the societies and communities he serves. Daniel is a creative and innovative leader and speaker who is always keen to explore new aspects of improving a nation and a company’s end-in-mind in achieving the best through collaboration, open partnership and sharing.
