Penang Economic Summit (PES) 2022: The Post-Pandemic Economic Reset

On 20 October 2022, the Penang Economic Summit 2022 was held at Setia SPICE Convention Centre, Penang. Penang Institute, in collaboration with Enterprise Asia, organised this conference with strategic support from InvestPenang and Digital Penang. As Penang is highly connected with the world, this conference discusses the critical global political and economic headwinds, which may have positive and negative impacts on various economic sectors in Penang and its region.

Five panel discussions represented by academics, policymakers and industry leaders shared their insights on the challenges faced by the world due to global headwinds; how the global supply chain is shaping the future of manufacturing in Penang; growth avenues in tourism, healthcare and logistics in the advent of technology; how the pandemic has laid a fundamental growth for a digital future; and last but not least, the strategies for talent retention and attraction in tackling the great resignation and brain drain post-pandemic.

Dato’ Dr Ooi Kee Beng, Executive Director of Penang Institute, moderated a high-level and notable panel with the participation of the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Chow Kon Yeow; Professor Danny Quah, Li Ka Shing Professor of Economics and Dean, LKYSPP – one of the Top 100 Most Influential Academics in Government in the world, and Dr Nungsari Ahmad Radhi, Economist, Member Board of Trustees Yayasan Rahimah bt Yusof. This session discussed the opportunities and challenges of the global economic outlook post-pandemic, with geopolitical events, deglobalisation and techno-nationalism needing to be addressed for future economic growth.

The Asia Pacific Enterprise Awards 2022 Regional Edition Gala Dinner

Penang Institute’s organising committee was invited to attend the Asia Pacific Enterprise Awards 2022 Regional Edition Gala Dinner held after the Penang Economic Summit 2022 on 20 October 2022. The awards honoured business leaders and enterprises across Asia who managed to excel despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The Awards were classified into four categories: Master Entrepreneur, Inspirational Brand, Fast Enterprise and Corporate Excellence. They were presented by His Excellency Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi bin Haji Abdul Razak, The Head of State of Penang.
