About the Talk:
The post-pandemic landscape will be profoundly different from the pre-pandemic situation. Not only will masks, social distancing and online work be normal, the geopolitical tensions, supply chain decoupling and technology disruptions will continue to add uncertainty of predictions, risks and business models. East Asia will be affected by the broader issues of US-China tensions, technology, climate change and post-pandemic reforms. Southeast Asia will be shaped by major decisions made outside their control, and Malaysia will also have to adjust due to rising competition from growing power of Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines, as well as Bangladesh. In addition, Penang will have to figure out how to adapt to these complex situation and mitigate the damaging effects.
About the Speakers:
Tan Sri Andrew Sheng
He is a former central banker and financial regulator in Asia and a commentator on global finance. He is Pro-Chancellor of Bristol University and Distinguished Fellow, Asia Global Institute, University of Hong Kong, as well as Chairman, George Town Institute of Open and Advanced Studies (“GIOAS”), Wawasan Open University (“WOU”), Malaysia.
He has a First Class Honours in Economics from Bristol University, and Honorary Doctorates from University of Bristol and University of Malaya. He is author of “From Asian to Global Financial Crisis” (Cambridge University Press 2009) and “Shadow Banking in China” (Wiley 2015). He writes regularly on international finance for Project Syndicate, AsiaNewsNet, Edge and Star. In April 2013, Andrew was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He also appeared in the Oscar-winning film “Inside Job” in 2011.
Prof Dato’ Dr Woo Wing Thye
He is a Distinguished Fellow at Penang Institute and Research Professor at Sunway University where he heads the Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia and the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development. He is also Vice-President for Asia at the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (New York City), Chang Jiang Professor at Fudan University (Shanghai), National Distinguished Expert at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (Beijing), and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California (Davis).
Wing was Executive Director of the Penang Institute during 2012-2013. He has been an economic advisor to several governments including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and USA. Wing’s current research focuses on the growth challenges of the East Asian economies e.g. the Sustainable Development Goals, the middle-income trap, green finance, international and regional economic architecture, technology acquisition and innovation, and the New Cold War.
