On the Seminar
A study on how youths between 16 and 28 years of age from the minority Indian community fare in realising their dreams; coping with challenges; and coming up with solutions was recently concluded. It was jointly carried out by Penang Institute, Malaysia, and Massey University, New Zealand under its CARE (Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation) Centre which focuses on participatory approaches and community empowerment of. In total, 45 in-depth interviews and a focus group discussion on a wide range of issues were recorded.
The interviewees shared openly on their key experiences including quota-based discrimination in gaining access to higher levels of education, discrimination in securing a job, name-calling in society, handling authority, handling being Indian and a Malaysian, and coping with expectations they place on themselves and that which comes from home, community and society. They also discussed, often hopefully, many ideas related to education, employment, sports, skills acquisition and social cohesion.
