On the 19th October, IDEAS hosted the 4th Liberalism Conference – an annual exercise to deliberate on the overall progress towards “A Malaysia that upholds the principles of liberty and justice” according to the vision pronounced by Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Among the many discussions that happened on that day, one of which Dato Dr Ooi, Executive Director of Penang Institute was part of, was titled “Redefining Malaysian Politics: Moving away from identity to policies”. He argued for the need for academics to actively inject social-scientific thinking into the public sphere and for journalism to take greater responsibility for the intellectual climate in the country.
