Where Women Matter, an anthology scripting 8 chapters, gives some understanding of women’s lives seen from 3 perspectives—economic, media and legal. The chapters written for the public, can also be viewed as a first reference for academics wishing to dwell deeper into the subject of women. The writings touch on perspectives not often discussed and oft times even left out. The various chapters are written by academics with diverse backgrounds. Three chapters group under the economic section, two under the media section and another three under the legal section. It is a book worth reading as works written on women are significant not only because it expands the view of the variation of women’s position but also highlights the differences that they face.

About the Panellists and Moderator
Rachel Samuel holds a PhD in Human Resource Management from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang. She is currently a senior lecturer with UiTM Melaka at its Faculty of Business and Management. Her previous work experiences include working with the Consumers Association of Penang, the National Drug Research Centre, and the International College Penang. Her research and writing mainly focuses on women and work, gender issues, employability, and social capital. In addition to teaching and doing research, she also volunteers as a para counsellor. Together with Dr. Rohana, she has edited and published 4 books on rape, domestic violence and this latest one on women.
Rohana Ariffin was a lecturer/ associate professor in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) from 1983 to 2003, teaching women studies and industrial relations for 20 years. She was also formerly the secretary and vice president of the Staff Academic Association at USM. Rohana has written 22 papers for journals on women and feminism, and up to 8 books on topics like trade unions, violence against women and feminism, among others. She was also formerly the President of Penang’s Women’s Centre for Change (WCC) and Parti Rakyat Malaysia. Interestingly, she has earned herself a trainer’s and black belt in martial arts, Mushindo.
Syerleena Abdul Rashid is currently a Member of the Penang Lesgilative State Assembly representing Seri Delima, a constituency located in Penang Island. She is also the assistant publicity secretary for DAP Penang and a national executive committee member of the party’s National Women’s Wing. Currently, Syerleena also serves on the Board of Directors for Penang STEM, Penang Science Cluster, Penang Green Council, Penang Women’s Development Corporation, Penang Halal International Hub and Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau
Yeong Pey Jung holds a Masters in Business from Swinburne University of Technology and a double degree in Arts (Psychology & Political Science) and Commerce (Economics) from University of Melbourne. Her main research work includes gender equality, minority marginalization and socio-economic issues in youth development. Other research interests include the Malaysia NEP, affirmative action in a welfare state, and the politics of international trade.
