GEORGE TOWN, PENANG - 8th JUNE 2010

Greening George Town Project – SERI to survey Lebuh Carnarvon residents on proposed project to green Lebuh Carnarvon from 10-11th June

A consortium of state and federal agencies, led by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (“WHI”), Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (“MPPP”), Think City Sdn Bhd (TCSB) and the Socio-Economic & Environmental Research Institute (SERI) will be carrying out a survey of Lebuh Carnarvon residents & businesses on 10th & 11th June for a proposed greening project along the main thoroughfare.

This project will form part of the Cleaner Greener Penang initiative launched on 22nd May 2010 by Y.A.B. Tuan Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang, which aims to deliver a cleaner and greener city and improve quality of life.

“This survey is the first step for us to gather feedback from the local community, and to channel this into the planning and implementation of the proposed greening project along Lebuh Carnarvon,” said Maimunah Mohd. Sharif, General Manager of WHI.

She added: “Lebuh Carnarvon was chosen as the pilot because it is one of the main arterial roads linking the historic city to the Jelutong Expressway. Therefore, greening of this street will have a major impact on residents and visitors alike. We hope all residents and businesses will be able to contribute their opinions and cooperate with the SERI surveyors.”

The feedback from the survey will help the planning team to identify community needs – especially to alleviate urban heat island effect – and contribute towards the design plans of greening the road dividers and traffic islands along Lebuh Carnarvon. There will be a public exhibition at WHI after the survey is completed, on the outcome of the survey and proposed design plans.
