The 14th General Election (GE14) has been idenfitied as a “Do or Die” situation by many pundits. This is because the last two elections had shown that new dimensions of conflict have come to dictate politics in Malaysia since 2003—or since 1998 depending on how one wants to begin one’s analysis.

With Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad now leading the opposition’s attack on Putrajaya, the historical significance of 2018 has become ever more undeniable. The long ‘transition’ has led to highly defensive politics at the federal level, at the cost of Malaysia’s long-term nation-building ambitions, a decade before Vision 2020 is to be fulfilled.

After the ‘tsunami’ against it in 2008 when five states went to the opposition, the Barisan Nasional failed to recover and instead weakened further in 2013 when it lost the popular vote. GE14 is therefore understandably seen by many as a new array of “reformasi” forces bent on toppling the UMNO-led BN. This time around, it has the man that the Reformasi Movement once saw as its archenemy, Tun Dr Mahathir, as its frontman. This paradox needs explaining, and part of that explanation is found in the fact that while all previous opposition coalitions since 1990 had included PAS, Pakatan Harapan does not. This is highly significant.

This seminar will discuss this, and other aspects of 2018. What issues will dominate the campaign? How will the East Malaysian factor change the equation, during and after the elections? What are the possible scenarios after GE14? In what ways is GE14 a “Do-or- Die” situation?
