Date : 11 November 2011, Friday
Time : 10 am - 12 noon
Venue : Cabin, Penang Institute
Programme Summary
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were born out of a global ambition to improve the economic and social conditions of the world poorest communities through 8 specific developmental goals to be achieved by 2015. The 8 MDGs are:
i. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
ii. Achieve universal primary education
iii. Promote gender equality and empower women
iv. Reduce child mortality
v. Improve maternal health
vi. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
vii. Ensure environmental sustainability
viii. Global partnership for development
While Malaysia has been commended by the UN-MDGs country team for progress made to achieve the aggregated targets of the MDGs nationally, the UN team has raised concern over entrenched inequalities and unequal development at the subnational levels. The 2010 report therefore adopts a disaggregated view of the progress and achievements, looking at the performance of the country at the subnational level, rural-urban locality, gender, ethnicity, age group, income group and other relevant disaggregated categories.
This Roundtable will feature presentation on the Malaysia MDGs 2010 report by Dr. Lin Mui Kiang, from the UN Country Team in Malaysia, who is responsible for the preparation of the report.
