"Rural -Urban Relations in the Mega-Urban Regions of East Asia. Implications for the Role of Penang Conurbation in the Development of the Koridor Utara." by Professor Terry MC Gee from the University of British Columbia on the 19th Nov, 3.45pm at Level 2, Wawasan Open University.
Abstract
This presentation explores issues that relate effects of the rapid expansions of urbanization in the deltaic environments of East and Southeast Asia. It is divided into three parts. First a brief analysis of the patterns of urban growth in these regions centered on the emergence of mega-urban regions the majority focused on the core cities of these regions such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Bangkok. A second part focuses in on the issue of rural-urban relations illustrated by the examples of the Red River Delta of Vitenam. This region has been historically developed as a major food basket of the production of rice, the major food staple of their countries. But the impact of spreading urbanization is leading to radical changes in the rural –urban relations in the regions exacerbated by the environmental challenges of global warming and environmental deterioration resulting from urbanization and “new agri-business” activities in the deltas. Finally the policy and management implications of these developments and the implications for the development of the “Koridor Utara” are discussed.
